Today Is The Day

As i sit here at Kennedy airport waiting to board, I can't help but be struck by the irony of the first two headlines i read this morning. USC/UCLA play today and yesterday OJ Simpson was sentenced to 16 years in prison. Not wanting to get into the muck of that situation, i can only think back to the moments, as a child, watching Simpson play for the Trojans. Life is a strange journey indeed.
On a positive and somewhat less reflective note, i got up at 5AM, scrambled to the airport, sleep deprived as usual, praying that Virgin America, weather, Music Express and luck permitting, i will make the 1:30 kickoff at the Rose Bowl for today's game. For the first time in decades both teams will wear their home jerseys and it underscores the significance of today's game. Not that in the grand scheme of things it really matters much. No National Championship for the Trojans, and UCLA is terrible but that is the beauty of this rivalry. For those not from Southern California, this is THE big game. Trojans and Bruins simply cannot stand each other. Oil and water, fire and ice, good and evil... good or evil depending upon which side of the sidelines you sit. The rivalry is intense and in this game anything can happen, witness the Trojans shocking loss two years ago, that could have well cost USC a bid for the National Championship. The scrappy little Bruins, the over-hyped Trojans suit up today and will settle it in about 8 hours. I feel like a kid again, excited for that moment in a few hours when i get to walk through that tunnel in Pasadena and watch the spectacle that is college football at it's finest. It's a good day to be a Trojan, and for that matter a good day to be a Bruin..
