Meet The Newest Coach... Err.... League President of the Week

Posted 5 days ago by Matt Wurst
If you have been paying any attention to all the recent pictures and videos uploaded from the Pop Warner Super Bowl at Disney World, you've probably seen Travis Nicholson's name pop up on your activity feed. We were fortunate enough to meet him and some of his players while down at the 8-day national event in Orlando a few weeks ago.

But Travis does much, much more than just share his teams' experiences with the Pop Warner weplay community. He does so while serving as the current President of the Detroit Hurricanes Youth Athletic & Enrichment Program (DHYAEP).

And while Travis knows plenty about his sport, being president of such a positive organization takes a lot more than on-the-field expertise. Travis contributes greatly to the DHYAEP's mission to "offer access to quality youth athletic and enrichment activities, in a positive and nurturing environment." He possesses the true spirit of a gifted coach, mentor and volunteer, giving back to the community of Southeast Michigan. Not only does his organization help foster talented football players, it brings up well-rounded young men and women by offering "tutoring and enrichment activities designed to address the entire scope of needs of [their] participants."

His Midget Detroit Hurricanes, cheered on by fans as "The 'Canes," completed their stellar season with a Super Bowl berth. But the road Disney intersected with a familiar foe, the familiar Harvey Colts, against whom they lost a tough battle last year in the Mid-America playoffs. So for the Canes, the rematch was a case of "same place... same opponent... same time... different results" this year, with the 'Canes avenging last year's loss. They came out victorious, 18-0.

At nationals, Travis' team advanced all the way to the semi-finals, where they lost a tough played game. Their defeat, just like any other, was a learning experience which they faced with dignity.

Travis' pride reinforces the hard work put in by the 'Canes coaches, players and parents this season. For more on the Detroit Hurricane's showing at Disney, check out the pictures Travis has posted.

    Superbowl 43

Posted 13 minutes ago by Brandon Burke
My guess is that the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Carolina Panthers will play in the superbowl, because the steelers are unstoppable in the AFC and the panthers are unstoppable in the NFC. If you have any other prediction tell me and why do you think so.

    New Year

Posted 1 day ago by Marie C

What is your favorite thing about the holidays? Is it the food? The presents? The family get-togethers? The cheesy sweaters?

Well, for me, I love everything and some of it, a little too much. The food, I mean. I love to eat but I love it a little too much. I have been overweight ever since I was 5 years old. I make no excuses for my weight. I could work out and eat healthier but I chose not to. And now, I'm paying for it. Big time. I am at probablly the heaviest weight I have ever been in my life. I can't even walk two flights of steps without my pulse racing or me being out of breathe.

But the real wake up call came when my mom told me about a conversation she had with my aunt. Tears in her eyes, my aunt told my mom how she couldn't believe how fat I had gotten. My aunt's boyfriend mentioned how much fun I use to be and wondered what happened to me. What was scariest was when my aunt mentioned that she didn't want another member of our family to die (my cousin died).

I made the decision to lose weight, get in shape, get healthier, and change my life.

I know this may seem embarrassing to admit to a bunch of strangers about my weight problems but I need to do this. I need to admit to myself that I have a problem. I know this will be painful and hard but I gotta do this.

    Happy New Year to all!
